HEPES buffer is commonly used to prepare prokaryotic (bacterial) cells for electroporation.

1 M HEPES buffer
Add 40 mL distilled water to a 50 mL tube
Measure and add 11.915 g HEPES Materials: HEPESMerck MilliporeSigma (Sigma-Aldrich)Catalog #H4034
Adjust pH to 7.4 with concentrated sodium hydroxide or hydrogen chloride
Add distilled water to 50 mL
Filter sterilize with a 0.2 µm pore-size filter
